Why we’re starting here

Why we chose Fyre first

A luxury sunset beach scene with a film reel logo, cocktail, sunglasses and glamping tents — the paradise the marketing promised

This is what the marketing promised.

Every great business has lessons hidden inside its successes — and its failures. We chose this story for the first BizFlixTalk Business Movie Panel because it shows how branding, marketing, leadership, operations, customer experience and execution are all connected. Pull one thread and the others move.

The goal isn’t to criticize what went wrong. It’s to help business owners recognize these warning signs before they appear in their own organizations.

Imagine this

Your marketing worked. Now what?

The campaign takes off. People are talking. Customers are buying. Social media is buzzing. Demand starts coming faster than you expected.

Sounds like success.

Until operations can't deliver. Until the team starts scrambling. Until customers start complaining. Until the promises made by your marketing become bigger than the business behind them.

We're not gathering to gossip about what went wrong. We're investigating what business owners can learn from it before it happens to us.

The business gap framework: marketing promise, customer expectation, the gap, operational reality and brand trust

Meet your host

The person asking the questions — and making sure the room leaves with something it can use on Monday.

Kat Shepherd, founder of BizFlixTalk

Host & moderator

Kat Shepherd

Business strategist  ·  Curriculum developer  ·  Educator  ·  Leader

Kat has taken a business from start-up to multi-million dollar enterprise and spent more than twenty-five years teaching other people how to do the same — in college classrooms, in the U.S. Air Force, and with thousands of small business owners.

She founded BizFlixTalk because business education works better when it starts with a story people already care about. Expect a conversation that keeps moving, pulls the panel toward specifics, and ends with something you can actually apply.

“BizFlixTalk makes business education unforgettable and implementation inevitable.”

Why this event matters

Most people watched it as entertainment. We watch it differently.

BizFlixTalk turns films and documentaries into practical business education through expert analysis, interactive discussion and real-world application.

You will leave with insights you can apply to your own business — not another movie review.

The promise versus the proof: buzz, demand, influence, visibility and hype on one side, capacity, systems, people, delivery and trust on the other. What happens when the promise travels faster than the business behind it?

Here's how the business investigation unfolds

Approximately 90 minutes

01

Lights
Welcome, plus meet the panel and what we'll be investigating.

02

Scene
We use the story to surface the business decisions and warning signs inside it.

03

Analyze
Different perspectives on marketing, leadership, operations and execution.

04

Your turn
Bring your own perspective into the conversation.

05

Connect
Brief, light networking in breakout rooms with other business owners who came ready to think and learn.

06

Action
Take the lesson back to the decisions you're making right now.

Don't just leave with notes.

Leave with something you can use.

✓ A way to spot demand-vs-capacity risk

See when marketing may be promising more than your operations can deliver.

✓ A sharper read on your marketing promises

Check whether the experience behind your promise can consistently deliver.

✓ Questions for your next planning meeting

Ask better questions about capacity, timing, resources and customer expectations.

✓ A framework for spotting warning signs earlier

Notice the small signals that become expensive problems when you grow fast.

✓ A better way to pressure-test an opportunity

Know what has to be true operationally before you say yes.

✓ A clearer line between marketing and operations

See why creating demand is only part of growth.

✓ One action to take within seven days

Turn what you learn into a specific next step.

✓ The FYRE-to-FUEL AI Action Kit

Five AI prompts and an Action Kit to keep learning.

90 minutes. One business story. New questions for your own business.

See the pattern

Hear expert perspectives

Apply the lesson to your business

The goal isn't to become an expert on FYRE.
It's to get better at recognizing the warning signs in your own business.

Walk away thinking differently about marketing, operations, leadership, customer experience, capacity, brand promises and growth.

Questions before you register

Do I need to watch the documentary first?

No. The documentary isn’t screened during the session, and watching it beforehand is optional. We’ll walk through the key moments together, so you can arrive knowing nothing about it. If you have seen it, you’ll get more out of the discussion.

Is this a movie review?

No. We use the story as a business case study. The conversation focuses on decisions, patterns, leadership, marketing and operations — not whether the movie was good.

Will there be networking?

Yes, in a light way. We set aside a brief window for online networking in breakout rooms, so you can connect with other attendees. The audience Q&A is a real conversation, and seats are limited so that works.

Will a replay be available?

Yes. A replay of the session will be available to registered attendees, so you can revisit the conversation and the ideas you want to apply.

How long is the session?

About 90 minutes, including the panel discussion, audience Q&A and a brief networking window in breakout rooms.

What does it cost, and could it be free for me?

$19.95 for founding attendees. Where a chamber, bank or economic development partner sponsors the event, attendance may be free for their members — check with your organization before you register.

Is this only for experienced business owners?

No. It is built for business owners, marketers, managers and students alike. You need curiosity, not an MBA.

Can’t make December 10?

Join the waitlist for future panels

The Founder in January, Air in February, and a new story every month after that. We’ll let you know what’s coming before seats open.

Limited founding attendee seats

The festival already happened.
The business lessons are still happening.

On December 10, we're putting FYRE back under the microscope — not to relive the disaster, but to investigate what entrepreneurs can learn from it.

Come examine the marketing. Question the decisions. Look behind the brand. Listen to different perspectives. And then turn the lens toward your own business.

What could you recognize now that might save you money, customers, reputation — or a much bigger problem later?
